Compound Flooding in a Subtropical Estuary Caused by Hurricane Irma 2017
نویسندگان
چکیده
Hurricane Irma affected the Florida peninsula from 10 to 12 September 2017. The peninsula's east coast was hit hardest: city of Jacksonville flooded around St. Johns River estuary with storm surge that exceeded 1.5 m and rainfall surpassed 20 cm in 24 hr. This study used observations such as water wind velocities, river discharge, salinity data determine whether compounding forcings influenced flood levels. Results show flooding initiated by ocean (first punch) then exacerbated discharge (second punch). 1–2 punch caused record flooding, impacts lasting through September. Peak occurred while winds were receding, increasing, rather than at peak either process. Compound models should consider phase lag between driving processes, individual maxima may not occur simultaneously, yet still exacerbate flooding.

Daytime Ozone Variation in Surface Air in a Subtropical Mangrove Estuary at Manakudy, South India
Surface ozone (SOZ) can be very harmful if it exceeds the threshold limit. It can accumulate over sea and can return back to the land along with the breeze. Rural and vegetation rich areas often record elevated levels of surface ozone because of the variations in Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) levels, wind velocity and direction. Similarly methane is also an important greenhouse gas and plays ...

متن کاملA Preseason Hurricane of Subtropical Origin
The occurence of the May 1951 hurricane of subtropical origin in the western Atlantic before the beginning of the usual tropical storm season was precedent-setting. Through an analysis of the hurricane an attempt is made to explain (1) the unusually early occurrence, (2) the difference between this hurricane of subtropical origin and the usual tropical storm, and (3) the movement as related to ...
متن کاملTurbulent Measurements in a Small Subtropical Estuary with Semidiurnal Tides
Since predictions of scalar dispersion in small estuaries can rarely be predicted accurately, new field measurements were conducted continuously at relatively high frequency for up to 50 h per investigation in a small subtropical estuary with semidiurnal tides. The bulk flow parameters varied in time with periods comparable to tidal cycles and other large-scale processes. The turbulence propert...
متن کاملDepletion of benthic invertebrates by bar-tailed godwits Limosa lapponica in a subtropical estuary
This study (1) investigated functional (capture rate, foraging success) and numerical (density) responses of bar-tailed godwits Limosa lapponica to an experimental decrease in densities of their prey, and (2) estimated seasonal depletion of the stock of their main prey, the mictyrid crab Mictyris longicarpus, in a subtropical estuary. It was predicted that if intake rates of the godwits are in ...
